Aidan Turner sports new beard as Poldark return is announced

He won the hearts of fans around the world when he took on the role of ruggedly handsome Cornish man Ross Poldark in the hit BBC drama of the same name.

But Aidan Turner looked a far cry away from his character in the beloved programme, as he sported a bushy beard while attending the show’s series four premiere.

Making an appearance at the special sneak-peak event at the BFI Southbank on Wednesday, Aidan looked dapper with his new facial hair.

The actor looked to be in high spirits as he spoke about the upcoming season with fans, after they were given a sneak preview of the new series’ first episode.

Aidan was clearly dressed to impress, as he teamed a dark blue top with a leather jacket and grey jeans for a casual chic look.

The fourth series is yet to be given a set air date, but Aidan was keen to take part in a Q&A session with show writer Debbie Horsfield and executive producer Karen Thrussell.

And while fans were excited to hear them talk about the upcoming series, it was the special video message from lead actress Eleanor Tomlinson that really made their night as she revealed that the show would return for a fifth season.

In the clip, which was also uploaded to the show’s official Twitter account, Eleanor said: ‘Hey everyone, I’m really sorry I can’t be there tonight at the BFI screening of series four, episode one.

‘I’m unfortunately tied up filming War of the Worlds at the minute so I’ve been running from aliens on a daily basis, which has been fun.’

She continued: ‘I’m looking forward to some more cliff-staring which is actually why I’m sending this video message because I can confirm that we are going to make series five of Poldark. So exciting!

‘Thank you so much for all your support. We wouldn’t have been there, we wouldn’t have made this show what it’s become without you guys so thank you for that.’

Luke Norris, Ciara Charteris, Christian Brassington, Esme Coy, Ellise Chappell, Josh Whitehouse and Harry Richardson also made an appearance at the event.

The finale for series three saw Poldark’s marriage on the rocks, as his wife Demelza (Eleanor) found her heart being swayed by another man.

Hugh Armitage, who is played by Josh Whitehouse, wooed the captain’s wife after he set his sights on a new role in Westminster, and the series ended with the married couple seriously considering where their future will take them.

Series four will see Poldark make his move on London, leaving Demelza to her own devices as she essentially becomes the boss of Nampara.

Leading man Aidan has previously confirmed that Poldark will end after five series, as all the stories in the books would have been covered.

He said: ‘We’ve covered all the books, and the entire stories. It’s a five-year gig, when it’s all done.’

Aidan’s new look may be related to his upcoming West End debut at the Noel Coward theatre, where he will take on the lead role in Martin McDonagh’s new production of The Lieutenant Of Inishmore from June 23.

The comedy will see the actor take on the role of a terrorist deemed too violent to be a member of the IRA, who is desperately trying to find out who knocked over his cat.

Poldark is based around Winston Graham’s saga, and follows its eponymous character as he returns to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War, only to find his feather dead and his true love about to marry someone else.
